Seeing Students Differently: A Lesson in Strength-Based Support
Day 3 brought the most powerful moment of all. We invited several students from the school - students the teachers had struggled to reach - and together, we explored each child’s strengths and challenges. Using those strengths, we designed strategies to support their disabilities in ways that felt empowering and hopeful.
It was transformative. Teachers and parents alike expressed hope that this approach could reshape education for their children. Like our colleagues in Kayonza, many said, “We wish we’d known this sooner.” But now, they’re equipped—and we’ll be right beside them when the semester begins in September, WhatsApp messages and all.
We closed the training with singing, prayer, praise—and of course, dancing. This is Rwanda after all 😊 Joy was the perfect final note. It reminded us that transformation doesn’t have to be solemn. It can be celebratory, communal, and full of life.
The seeds planted this week are already taking root. And we’re grateful to have played a small part in this journey toward inclusive, strength-based education.
