Lessons in Love and Inclusion: A Journey of Hope in Rwanda
From “I don’t know what to do” to “I can do this.”
Post 2: From Uncertainty to Empowerment — Teachers Rise to the Challenge
When we first began our teacher training program, many of the participants were unsure. They had never worked with children with disabilities before. Some openly admitted, “I don’t know what to do with a disabled child.” But what unfolded over the past week was nothing short of transformative.
Each morning, the teachers gathered to plan their lessons—carefully considering how to engage both typical and special needs children. In the afternoons, they put those plans into action, teaching mixed groups with courage, creativity, and compassion.
What we witnessed was beautiful.
Teachers who had once hesitated were now modifying lessons on the fly, adjusting activities to suit each child’s unique needs. They cheered for every small victory, offered hugs and high fives, and created a classroom environment filled with encouragement and joy.
One teacher knelt beside a child who struggled to follow instructions and gently guided him through the task, celebrating his effort with smiles. Another teacher rewrote her entire lesson mid-class when she realized one of her students couldn’t understand the original plan. These weren’t just teaching moments—they were moments of deep human connection.
The children responded with enthusiasm. They felt seen, heard, and valued. And the teachers began to see themselves not just as educators, but as advocates for inclusion.
This week reminded us that teaching is not about perfection—it’s about presence. It’s about showing up with an open heart and a willingness to learn alongside your students. It’s about believing that every child, regardless of ability, deserves a chance to thrive.
We are so proud of these teachers. They gave up their school holidays to come each day and learn new skills. And they didn’t just learn—they grew. They became leaders.
As we look ahead, we know the journey isn’t over. These teachers will return to their schools as ambassadors of inclusion, equipped with new tools and a renewed sense of purpose. And we will continue to support them, pray for them, and walk beside them as they change the future of education in Rwanda.
